Many different types of people can benefit from advanced tooth replacement. Sometimes, patients have suffered for a while with broken or damaged teeth. They hold on to these teeth over the fear that they’ll have to be extracted. It is true that root canal therapy, while highly successful, can’t save or preserve every tooth that needs to be treated.

However, deep decay will not resolve on its own without intervention. Untreated, decay and disease will continue to progress and may result in an infection or abscess. This infection can spread to other areas of the face, head, and other parts of the body.

Likewise, some patients that have had extractions may be facing new challenges to their oral and overall health. The bone in the jaw deteriorates without the stimulation that it gets from teeth through behaviours such as chewing and grinding down food. Over time, patients may find that it’s difficult to pronounce words properly and clearly. They may have problems chewing food, and their nutrition suffers. Even the shape of the face changes, as the overlying tissues don’t have adequate support from strong, dense bone.

We at Downtown Dental Centre recommend moving forward with tooth replacement as soon as possible. That way, you avoid the destructive effects of bone loss or resorption. Patients with bone loss can still be candidates for dental implants as well, thanks to techniques that build up bone to prepare it for the placement of the implant. Generally, the process of getting implants is straightforward:

  • Your mouth is evaluated. X-rays are taken to determine if dental implant-supported bridges and dentures are right for you. Also, imaging and information collected from your evaluation are used to plan for the precise placement of the implants. Each implant is placed in exactly the right spot to support your new teeth adequately.
  • The placement process itself involves accessing the jawbone. The implant is placed in a predetermined location. As little as four implants can be placed to support an entire upper or lower arch of teeth. So, placement is very precise and designed to produce minimal trauma and alteration to existing oral structures while providing maximum support.
  • The implant is made from a biocompatible material. It naturally and safely joins to the bone in the jaw. This process of osseointegration may take around four months to complete. An abutment or connector piece may be placed at the time of the initial procedure or placed after the treatment site has healed.
  • As the finishing touch, the restoration is placed on top of the abutment. Since the abutment is connected to an implant that is now a part of the jawbone, your new tooth, bridge, or denture is fully stabilised. The implant then functions like a tooth root. It holds the teeth in place.
